What if you didn’t have to wait for the perfect moment to feel happy, confident, or calm? What if you could start feeling that way right now? I remember as a young adult wanting my mom to be in the UK with me. Id always wish for her to be here with me and I'm not sure whether I visualised or even knew what that was but I do believe that our thoughts shape your reality. She's been living in the UK with me for over 20 years. When we combine mental rehearsal ( known as a visualisation and yoga, we tap into our brain’s amazing power to change how we think, feel, and act.
Here’s a few powerful tools to open up to your potential.
1. Mental Rehearsal: Practice Makes Perfect
Mental rehearsal is like training your brain to the best outcome. The brain doesn’t know the difference between an experience that’s happening in real life and one that you imagine clearly in your mind. This means that when you see yourself in a situation achieving your goal, feeling calm, confident, or focused, your brain starts to build the same pathways as if it were actually happening.
When you vividly picture a situation, the same neural pathways are activated as if it were truly happening. Studies with athletes show that mental rehearsal improves performance—so why not apply the same practice to everyday life?
2. Yoga and Meditation: Rewire Your Brain
Yoga goes well beyond improving physical flexibility and strength—it has a profound impact on the brain. Research from institutions like Harvard has shown that regular yoga and meditation can reshape the brain. Practising these regularly strengthens areas responsible for focus, emotional regulation, and memory, while shrinking the amygdala, the part of the brain that governs stress and fear.
3. The Three Types of Stress: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
Stress is unavoidable in modern life, but not all stress is created equal. There’s acute stress, the short bursts of pressure that help us rise to meet challenges; episodic stress, which pops up regularly and can make us feel constantly on edge; and chronic stress, which lingers and wears us down over time. Chronic stress is particularly harmful, as it can lead to a host of health problems, from anxiety and insomnia to heart disease.
Yoga, however, is an effective remedy for all three types of stress. By engaging the parasympathetic nervous system (your body’s natural “rest and digest” response), yoga helps lower cortisol levels—the stress hormone linked to inflammation and disease. Research shows that just 20 minutes of yoga can significantly reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve sleep, all while calming the mind.
4. Unlock the Power of Your Mind
The real magic of yoga is that it reminds us that the power to change comes from within. Whether you’re holding a challenging pose or focusing on your breath, yoga encourages you to tap into your inner strength. Combined with mental rehearsal, you can train your mind to respond more calmly to stress and build emotional resilience.
Go a head and try imagining how you want to feel right now, and just like that we begin to create new neural pathways. But its a practice each day 1-2 min or 5-10 so keep with it. Neuroscience shows that regular practice of this kind can rewire the brain, making it easier to choose calm, focus, and confidence over panic or fear. When this is paired with the mindful movement of yoga, you can unlock untapped potential in both body and mind.
