For many of us, the new year brings on ambitions and goals which is a notable start for a better year ahead. A regular yoga practise can help in everyday life as it teaches us that with each new breath comes the chance to start over, afresh, start anew. There is also a special opportunity for evolution. If we have grown tired of the old way of doing or being – we can create a new way. We can choose to see a bigger, more interconnected picture of our reality, and act accordingly. We can choose to gently love even the darkest aspects of ourselves, and in doing so, cultivate true compassion for ourselves and others. Sankalpa is a Sanskrit word that means “will, determination or purpose”. To make a Sankalpa is like a New Years Resolution but with a yogic twist. While a resolution can often have a perceived negative aspect of ourselves. ie I need to lose weight (Im fat) so no more chocolate; To rather explore that when I'm stressed or down I crave sugar. Its intentionally being conscious of when the need or feelings arise and then to let it arise and then to let it pass.
